How the split works

The list is shuffled, then dealt out one at a time — like dealing cards — so the groups come out as even as the numbers allow. Nineteen children into four groups gives you five, five, five and four, never six and three.

Nothing is uploaded

The shuffle happens in the page. There is no account, no form submission and nothing stored, so a class list pasted here does not leave the device it was typed on. You can confirm that by switching off the network and using the page anyway.

Why dealing beats slicing

The obvious way to split a list is to cut it into equal chunks. That is fine until the number does not divide, at which point the last group is short by everything the others rounded up. Dealing spreads the remainder one person at a time, so the difference between the biggest and smallest group is never more than one.
