How a grade percentage is worked out

Divide the marks achieved by the marks available and multiply by a hundred. 47 รท 60 ร— 100 = 78.3%.

Why this page will not tell you the grade

Because it would be guessing. Grade boundaries are set after the papers are marked, so that the standard stays the same year to year even when a paper turns out harder than intended. They differ by exam board, by subject, by tier and by series.

Any page that claims a fixed percentage equals a fixed grade is describing one paper from one year, and quietly applying it to yours. Check the boundaries your board published for your series โ€” they are the only ones that count.

Combining more than one paper

Add the marks, then add the totals, then divide โ€” do not average the two percentages. A paper out of 100 and a paper out of 20 do not count equally, and averaging their percentages pretends they do.

Right: (45 + 16) รท (100 + 20) = 50.8%.
Wrong: (45% + 80%) รท 2 = 62.5%.

When a target is out of reach

The second calculator will tell you if the marks required exceed the marks available. That is worth knowing early and plainly, rather than after the paper.
